Lemongrass Essential Oil! Long been appreciated and used by those in South East Asia, it grew native to Malyasia, but has been a staple of households in India, Thailand, China and many other countries for centuries. There are also many references to what may have been Lemongrass in ancient literature, especially in Hebrew documents. Scholars believe that the word kaneh was a Hebrew term generic for all sweet smelling grasses, including Lemongrass. Its highly fragrant stems were said to still be offering its pungent lemony therapy centuries after being placed in several Pharaoh’s tombs. When archeologist opened several tombs, faint lemony perfume was detected in the air and lemongrass stalks found near the entombed bodies. The close cousin of the popular citronella, Lemongrass is an excellent insect repellent. Lemongrass not only repels but kills many insect species as well. The same lemony scent that citronella produces can also be enjoyed when using Lemongrass: definitely a plus over the traditional “stinky” bug sprays that are commercially available. Historically, Lemongrass Oil has also been prized for its anti-bacterial, anti-viral and anti-fungal properties, as well as a fever reducer, anti-depressant, pain reliever, astringent, deodorant, diuretic, aid to nursing and sedative. It is amazing how this edible plant can aid the body in so many different ways. For ease of use, Beeyoutiful’s steam-distilled Lemongrass oil harnesses the strength of the Lemongrass plant into one bottle! One of our Beeyoutiful's staff members recently had a chance to use Lemongrass Essential Oil during a time of illness on her children. She had read about how it had been used in ancient times to reduce fevers and decided to try it on herself and children. After mixing three drops of the lemongrass into one teaspoon of Beeyoutiful's Almond Oil, she rubbed it on their temples, navels and bottom of the feet. She was delighted to find that the fevers not only subsided, but all were resting quietly within thirty minutes. Pain Reliever In both ancient and Modern Chinese medicine, Lemongrass Essential Oil has been used to a rub on sore muscles or the temples for headaches. Blending Lemongrass Oil with a carrier oil makes a superb massage oil. It can be used liberally as long as no skin sensitivity is observed. Makes a great homemade massage oil! Deodorant and Astringent: A few drops can be used to help keep acne at bay. You may add to witch hazel or plain water to rinse the face. The same mixture may be sprayed or applied to places where offensive odors often occur. The sweet smell of Lemongrass is a nice alternative, especially on warm days! Caution: Lemongrass can cause some skin irritation so keep watch for signs of sensitivity. Either increase carrier oil amount or decrease the Lemongrass in the ratio. If the skin is too sensitive, Lemongrass essential oil may be diffused in the room.
