Here is a Practical Use for Clary Sage Essential Oil
Inspiration in a bottle! Or cure all in a bottle! What can Clary Sage not do?
Clary Sage can help stimulate healthy thought patterns, lighten moods, and is a woman’s best friend during menstruation. There are literally so many things it supports, it would probably be easier to list what it does not do. It's a must-have oil to keep on hand for every member of the family, for almost any complaint they could list.
The plant is seen growing in the wild all over Europe, Russia, and the United States, but was traditionally native to Syria, France, Italy and Switzerland. It has large hairy green leaves like the traditional sage plant, and yields small purple-blue flowers. The oil is steam distilled from the leaves, leaving behind a beautiful light amber colored oil. The oil itself has a nutty, earthy flavor that's slightly sweet.
Clary Sage is said to have gotten its name from the Latin word clarus meaning clear. In historical writings, we see that Clary Sage was used to help vision problems, and “clearing” up the eyes. Due to its intoxicating properties, merchants would often mix it with wine to increase the intoxicating effects of the wine without adding to the overall price, thereby increasing the profits. Clary Sage has often been used as a fragrance in soaps and lotions. When added to lotion, it can be used as an invigorating rub.
Topical concentration of 0.25% is considered generally safe for external use. (To achieve this ratio, combine 1 drop of Clary Sage Essential Oil to 4 teaspoons of a carrier oil.)
Nervous System Uses: Clary Sage works with the hypothalamus to relieve anxiety, enliven moods and help enhance the ability to focus. If using topically, rub the diluted oil on the temples, navel, and feet. It may also be used on the spine and shoulders to help eliminate stress and anxiety.
Reproductive Health Uses: Due to its antispasmodic affects, it is very effective against cramping. Rub several drops over the abdomen for almost instant relief. May rub on the navel, bottom of the feet, and wrist for help sleeping during cramps. (Warning: may cause some sedation; do not use when operating machinery or driving.) Rubbing on the abdomen may also help relieve painful or unusual bleeding by causing the areas to open up and release the flow of blood. Clary Sage has also been reported to help with libido.
Respiratory Health Uses: Clary Sage can be very effective in relieving coughs. Combined with its relaxing effects, Clary Sage can be helpful in allowing your body to rest from the constant coughing. Topically, rub oil that has been mixed with a carrier oil such as jojoba or sweet almond oil on temples, chest, navel and bottom of the feet.
Ocular Health Uses: Clary Sage was called “Oculus Christi” or “Eye of Christ” in the Middle Ages because of its propensity to help relieve eye disorders. It can help soothe eyes. (Note: Do NOT apply the oil directly to the eye.) To use, mix Clary Sage Essential Oil with a carrier oil an then rub on the temples.
Digestive Health Uses: Clary Sage may help expel gas, and it's also very helpful in releasing and maintaining stomach “juices”. Apply the diluted oil Clary Sage to your abdomen and the bottom of your feet.
Pregnancy/Lactation: Clary Sage should not be used during pregnancy because it can induce labor, but can be very effective for relieving labor pains and discomfort. It is generally considered safe to use during lactation, but we advise speaking with your healthcare practitioner prior to using to insure it is appropriate for your specific situation.
Note: Due to the sedative affects, Clary Sage Essential Oil should be used with caution. Overuse can cause headache. It enhances the affects of alcohol and narcotics, so the combination is not suggested. Suggested dilution of 0.25% (1 drop to 4 teaspoons of carrier oil) for topical use.
