Lemons are a symbol of cleanliness and purity with documented use dating back to 800 BC. Lemon Oil has been used historically to help contain and treat infectious diseases, especially colds and fevers. Its scent also helps to increase concentration and neutralizes unpleasant odors. Some hospitals use lemon oil to help calm frightened or depressed patients. Today, lemon oil extracts are used in many household and personal care applications for its refreshing scent.
We've become accustomed to the invigorating "zing" of lemon scent in many products such as dish soap, laundry detergent, and hand soap. However, it’s not just the lively, fresh scent that makes Lemon Essential Oil a popular ingredient in household cleaners.
Cold-pressed from the fresh peels of lemons, Lemon Essential Oil has been used for hundreds of years, and although it is most well known as a cleanser, it has an incredibly diverse variety of lesser known – but no less effective -- applications.
Lemon's aroma is a great aid in uplifting the spirits and easing symptoms of anxiety and depression. Add a few drops of Lemon Essential Oil to a refreshing bath. Add 3-5 drops to a spray bottle with water and spritz each room in the house to get a vibrant, clean smell while disinfecting the air.
Mix Lemon Essential Oil with a carrier oil for a refreshing massage oil. Or add one to two drops in a warm bath for an invigorating soak. A drop can be added to your daily shampoo to decrease the presence of oil in the hair.
To use topically, the concentration of Lemon Essential Oil to carrier oil should be a maximum of 2% (to achieve, mix 2 drops of Lemon Essential Oil with 1 teaspoon of carrier oil). Lemon Essential Oil blends well with chamomile, eucalyptus, fennel, frankincense, geranium, juniper, lavender, sandalwood, and ylang ylang.
Diffusing: Whether diffusing alone or in combination with other essential oil, Lemon Essential Oil can offer a refreshing boost to a dreary day.
Household: Lemon Essential Oil can be used in homemade cleaning recipes, dish soaps, hand soaps and laundry detergent. Use 25-30 drops in the washing machine instead of bleach. Five drops in a gallon of water makes a great fruit and vegetable rinse. Adding ten drops to witch hazel or alcohol makes a cheerful room spray.
Caution: Lemon Essential Oil is strongly phototoxic, increasing skin sensitivity to the sun. It should not be used topically if going out into the sunshine fewer than twelve hours after application. Lemon is also very sensitive to light and air exposure; to prevent oxidization, store in a cool, dark place. If oil has been exposed to light and air, be aware that increased skin sensitivity may result. To use topically, the concentration of Lemon Essential Oil to carrier oil should be a maximum of 2% (to achieve, mix 2 drops of Lemon Essential Oil with 1 teaspoon of carrier oil).
Pregnancy/Lactation: Although generally considered appropriate for use during pregnancy and lactation, we advise that you speak with your healthcare practitioner prior to use to insure it is appropriate for your specific situation.
