Catnip, a member of the mint family, was originally grown in Europe and Asia and is now seen quite commonly around many parts of the United States. With the aroma of freshly cut grass with slight mint undertones, it's infamous for stimulating cats and attracting butterflies.
Catnip herb was historically used for deterring bugs, soothing anxiety and moods, and helping to calm respiratory discomforts. While not studied as extensively as some of the more popular oils, studies have shown that one of the active chemical components, Nepetalactone, can be even more effective than common commercial products in deterring mosquitos. Blends well with Lavender, Lemon, Marjoram, Grapefruit, Peppermint, Orange, Rosemary, Spearmint, Myrrh, and Eucalyptus.
Topical: After diluting with a carrier oil, Catnip Essential Oil can be applied to the back of the neck, spine, feet, and shoulders to help with respiratory discomfort, anxiety, restlessness, and to promote sleep. A drop can be added to your lotion to help repel mosquitos. Topical application should be used at a 5% concentration of Catnip when mixed with a carrier oil. (To achieve, please mix 5 drops of Catnip with 1 teaspoon of a carrier oil).
