Selenium is a very highly researched and studied trace mineral. Studies on selenium have shown that it may provide protection against many different cancers. It has been shown in studies to protect against radiation and the ravages that it can have on the kidneys. Selenium has also been known to be helpful in strengthening the immune system and may provide anti-oxidative protection.
It's funny, they say mushrooms are a good source of selenium, and though I have tried over the years to like mushrooms, I just don't. For whatever reason, I literally cannot stomach them, or the smell of them. These are great if you feel you aren't getting slenium through your diet, but I swear these smell like mushrooms. I just plug my nose and take them though, and at least they don't have a taste.
