Alpha Lipoic Acid (ALA – not to be confused with Alpha Linolenic Acid, which is also called ALA) is a fatty acid found in every cell in the body, and is necessary to produce energy for normal body functions. It is also a powerful antioxidant with a unique characteristic: Where other antioxidants are either water soluble (such as vitamin C) or fat soluble (such as Vitamin E), ALA is the only antioxidant that is both water and fat soluble, allowing it to access every area of cells.
Beeyoutiful’s 600 mg Alpha Lipoic Acid uses only the highest grade of ALA available and is combined with 30 mg of Grape Seed Extract and 5 mg of Bioperine® making it an easily absorbed, synergistic blend.
Antioxidant 101
Antioxidants are vital when it comes to combating free radicals in the body and preventing cellular damage. Free radicals are atoms or molecules that have an odd number of electrons in their outer ring. The electrons in the outer ring are paired, so having an odd number means that one pair is missing an electron. The free radical will indiscriminately steal an electron from another atom or molecule to fill its empty space, thereby creating a new free radical.
Unless stopped, this chain reaction will continue, eventually causing a great deal of cellular damage in the body as well as causing inflammation. This is where antioxidants come to the rescue, giving the needed electron to free radicals (or taking one, to balance things out) so that the chain reaction is stopped in its tracks.
Antioxidants have become increasingly vital as our bodies encounter more and more toxins in diet and in the environment such as pesticides, exhaust fumes, heavy metals, radiation, cigarette smoke, and refined foods – all of which produce free radicals. With at least 50 diseases linked to free radical damage, now is a good time to pull out the big guns, starting with ALA.
Alpha Lipoic Acid at Work
Alpha lipoic acid is the Ace of antioxidants, being able to enter every area of cells – both the water and fat -- and neutralize free radicals. It is known for its ability to work synergistically with other antioxidants -- such as vitamin C, vitamin E, glutathione, and coenzyme Q10 -- by recycling them for further use after they have run their course and been “used up”.
Glutathione, a vital antioxidant for immune, liver and brain health, and a major repair enzyme, is one of the few antioxidants that cannot be supplemented orally as it is completely broken down in the stomach before it can ever reach the blood stream. Research has found that ALA helps to increase the production of glutathione, adding even more protection to the body. ALA is also an effective heavy metal chelator and its interaction with glutathione – itself a chelator -- increases chelation potential in the body. For more information on the use of ALA as a chelator, see this article (link Heavy Metals article).
Another of ALA’s amazing functions is its capacity to travel across the blood-brain barrier. Very few substances can cross the blood-brain barrier, and this direct access allows ALA to be used right where it is most needed with no obstacles. Grapeseed Extract – a very potent antioxidant -- can also pass through the blood-brain barrier and has been paired with Beeyoutiful’s ALA and Bioperine, which increases bioavailability, for prime effectiveness.
Diabetes has benefited greatly from ALA. It has been used to aid in reversing peripheral neuropathy and slowing autonomic neuropathy (particularly as related to diabetes, but not limited to this) and has also been suggested for cataracts and glaucoma. ALA, which enhances insulin sensitivity and plays a crucial role in absorbing glucose out of the blood and taking it into the cells for energy, is known to improve blood sugar control, as well.
Symptoms of burning mouth syndrome, which resemble those of neuropathy, may be reduced using ALA.
Helping to protect brain and nerve tissue, ALA has lowered damage in neurological diseases such as stroke, multiple sclerosis, and may slow Alzheimer’s, improve general memory and aid in Parkinson’s disease. It diminishes damage from various forms of radiation, as well, such as sunburn, x-ray, and radiation treatments used in cancer therapy.
ALA is useful in fighting inflammation and water retention that results from inflammation. Research has also found it to play a role in the chronic inflammatory process called atherosclerosis, by reducing the buildup of cholesterol in blood vessels and possibly lowering the risk of heart attack or stroke.
And of course, ALA is believed to keep us young…and young-looking! Based on the theory that free radical damage to cells is the cause of chronic illness and aging, and that ALA is able to help eliminate damaged collagen, ALA has been used by many to “erase wrinkles”.
